Colorado Bend State Park

Tangled hair, dirty boots, campfire scented clothes… Three simple things to let you know that you’re off on a great adventure. I recently traveled to Colorado Bend State Park for an early Valentine’s Day celebration, and I couldn’t have picked a better spot. This state park is nestled in an
isolated location in the Texas Hill Country and provides many activities alongside, below, and afloat the Colorado River. Being there for only a day, I wasn’t able to do more than a few hikes, but I will definitely be back for more! I highly recommend visiting this park, and discovering the beautiful surroundings, like Gorman Falls, on your own.

Camping in Colorado Bend

I was excited to learn that all of the campsites (minus the Windmill Backpack Camping Area) are located right beside the river. It was so nice to see the soft sunset hit the side of the hill, making the river sparkle beautifully. We were unable to snag a spot directly on the river, but we could still enjoy the view from our campfire. The sky was perfectly clear, once the sun went down, we could see the whole universe in the night’s sky.

Hiking in Colorado Bend

We enjoyed a light hike on the River Backpack Trail. It was a perfect hike shaded under the trees and next to the river. Since the park is pretty secluded in the Hill Country, it was so very quiet and peaceful. We could even the hear the flap of a hawk’s wings above us. But our favorite hike, like many, was the trail to Gorman Falls. The journey was pretty rocky, and steep towards the end, but totally worth it for the view. The waterfalls in Texas tend to be pretty short, but Gorman Falls is a beautiful 65ft waterfall cascading over lush moss into a small, clear pool that spills into the Colorado River. The falls are also protected as it supports a sensitive ecosystem. The hike there was 3 miles roundtrip, and I would take that hike everyday to marvel at that beautiful spot if I could.

Although we were only there for a day, we enjoyed so much. I definitely
encourage anyone to visit this park and enjoy the natural beauty.
